The time a wire must be in to go out the same business day at major US banks, in ET, with each bank’s wire fee.

A domestic wire goes out the same business day only if your bank has it before its own wire transfer cutoff time. At the banks we checked that publish one, the cutoff for a same-day domestic wire runs from 2:00 PM ET (Capital One, online) to 6:45 PM ET (Citibank, online). The Federal Reserve’s own deadline for customer transfers on Fedwire is 6:45 PM ET.

Miss the cutoff and the wire waits for the next business day; weekends and Federal Reserve holidays do not count, and the next one is October 12, 2026. International wires usually have an earlier cutoff than domestic ones at the same bank.

What the cutoff means for you

  1. Before the cutoff: the bank sends the wire the same business day, and a domestic wire usually arrives that day.
  2. After the cutoff, or on a weekend or Fed holiday: it goes out the next business day.
  3. International wires: most banks set an earlier cutoff, and the money can take days to arrive abroad.
