Limits are for personal accounts moving money between your own accounts at two banks (often called external or bank-to-bank transfers). “Each way” means the same limit applies to money going out and coming in. An empty cell means the bank’s pages we checked give no figure for that period. Ally, KeyBank, PNC and Truist show their limits only inside online banking or the app, so they are not in the table.
How to move more than your limit
- Pull instead of push. Many banks set a different limit on money coming in. Alliant allows $150,000 a day in against $25,000 out, so starting the transfer from the receiving bank can move more.
- Split it over days. Daily limits apply per day or per business day, while monthly and rolling 30-day caps add up over the whole period, so check both.
- Use a wire for one large payment. A wire is a separate payment with its own limits; it usually lands the same day if sent before the cutoff, but costs a fee; see ach vs wire transfer and the wire transfer cutoff time by bank.
Warning
A higher limit does not make a transfer safer. If someone you have not met asks you to move money to an account “to keep it safe” or to receive a refund, stop and call your bank on the number on its own website.
How long a transfer takes is in how long does ach take, and faster options are in same day ach. If a transfer is stuck, see ach transfer pending. Every figure here comes from our bank list. More tables: bank comparison tables.
