Short answer

How long does ACH take? A Same Day ACH payment settles within hours on the day it is sent. A standard ACH credit settles on the next banking day or the one after, as the sender chooses; debits settle the same or next banking day. Nacha estimates 80% of ACH payments settle in one banking day or less. Weekends and Federal Reserve holidays do not count as banking days.

ACH (the Automated Clearing House network) carries direct deposits, bill payments and transfers between your own accounts at different banks. It works in batches with fixed deadlines, so what matters is when the sending bank submits the payment and which settlement it targets.

Same Day ACH deadlines

Banks send Same Day ACH files to the ACH operator in three windows. If your bank submits by a window’s deadline, the payment settles that afternoon or evening.

Window Bank’s submission deadline Settlement Receiving bank must make credit available
First 10:30 AM ET 1:00 PM ET By 1:30 PM receiving bank’s local time
Second 2:45 PM ET 5:00 PM ET By 5:00 PM receiving bank’s local time
Third 4:45 PM ET 6:00 PM ET By the end of the receiving bank’s processing day

These are the deadlines for banks. Your bank sets an earlier cutoff for its customers so it can make the window. Its transfer page or deposit agreement lists that cutoff.

Standard (next-day) ACH

A standard ACH credit, such as a paycheck, carries an effective date one or two banking days after it is processed. Since September 18, 2026, the receiving bank must make every standard ACH credit available by 9:00 AM its local time on the settlement date, however late the day before it received the file. Before that date, the 9:00 AM deadline applied only to files received by 5:00 PM the day before. Nacha notes that a Friday payroll direct deposit is available on Friday morning in virtually all cases.

Why your ACH transfer takes longer than this

Your bank’s own cutoff. A transfer started after your bank’s daily cutoff is treated as the next banking day’s.

Weekends and holidays. ACH settles only when the Federal Reserve’s settlement service is open. A transfer started on Friday evening usually settles Monday, or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday.

Holds and reviews. A bank that reasonably suspects a credit is unauthorized may hold it, and must tell the sending bank. Your account agreement also describes when transfers you pull in from another bank are available.

The sender chose two days. A company can schedule a credit to settle two banking days out.
