Short answer

Venmo gives two reasons a personal payment sits at Pending: your bank has not yet cleared a payment funded from a linked bank account, or you sent to a phone number or email that is not verified or not tied to a Venmo account. Bank-funded payments typically take 3 to 5 business days. A payment nobody claims is cancelled and refunded after 30 days.

Pending is not the same as declined, and a pending transfer out to your own bank runs on a different clock. Your Transactions feed shows the status and, for a bank-funded payment, an estimated completion date; when the payment completes, Venmo notifies both you and the recipient.

Why a Venmo payment is pending

The bank case applies only to payments funded from a linked bank account, not to a debit card, a credit card or money in your Venmo balance. The User Agreement calls this an e-check: Venmo may choose to process a bank-funded personal payment that way, and the recipient does not get the money until the bank processes it, which usually takes 3 to 5 business days. Venmo’s FAQ page states the same window as up to 5 business days.

In the second case your payment method is still charged, but the money does not reach the recipient until they finish setting up their Venmo account or verify the email or number you used.

Two other situations fall outside those timings. A payment to a PayPal customer in another country may need more time, and purchases from merchants or with the Venmo Debit Card are processed differently from personal payments. Some merchants take up to 30 days to complete a transaction, and Venmo may hold the amount in your account for that period. Venmo also holds a payment to a merchant it identifies as high risk while it reviews the transaction, and cancels it and returns the money if it does not clear it.

A payment flagged for review is typically resolved within 48 hours, and Venmo contacts you by email if it needs more information. Venmo reviews activity at other points too, including when you start a transfer to your bank, and says a review can delay, block or cancel a transfer, hold money, or reverse payments you previously received. It may also ask you to verify your identity if you send $300 or more in a rolling 7 day period, move $1,000 or more to your bank in a week, or receive payments for goods and services. Until verification is complete, Venmo may limit the account and your access to the money in it.

Pending transfer from Venmo to your bank

A standard transfer leaves Venmo over the Automated Clearing House and typically completes within one business day, though it can take up to 3 business days; weekends and US bank holidays do not count, and a transfer started after 7:00 PM ET on a weekday waits for the next business day. On your statement, look for the note VENMO-0 CASHOUT. If nothing has arrived after three full business days, Venmo says the account details may be wrong or your bank may not accept the transfer. For the underlying timing, see how long does ACH take.

Timeline

  1. Saturday, any timeyou start a standard transfer; it waits, because weekends are not business days
  2. Mondaythe transfer starts processing (Tuesday if Monday is a US bank holiday)
  3. Tuesday to Thursdaythe money typically lands in one business day, at most three

During the first hour, while a standard transfer is still pending, the Me tab shows Get it faster and Cancel it under the transfer details. After that, a pending transfer normally just needs time for Venmo’s internal review.

An instant transfer reaches an eligible US bank account or debit card typically within 30 minutes for a 1.75% fee, minimum $0.25 and maximum $25, the same figures we list under instant transfer fees. Venmo says instant transfers can be made 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of weekends or holidays. If it still shows pending, wait 30 minutes and then check your statement for an original credit transaction or a real-time payment rather than an ACH deposit. Instant transfers can be declined by Venmo’s automated security measures, and Venmo says its support teams cannot override those declines; the free standard transfer stays available.

How to cancel a pending Venmo payment

Open the Me tab, find the transaction at the top of your Transactions feed and tap Take Back. Venmo offers this only when the recipient’s phone number or email address is “not associated with an active Venmo account”. A refund reaches a Venmo balance right away, a bank account in up to 5 business days, and a credit or debit card in up to 7 business days.

For a bank-funded payment to an active Venmo account there is no Take Back. Venmo says to contact your bank directly, and only while the payment still shows as Pending with an estimated completion date.

Warning

If you ask your bank to stop a payment that has already completed, Venmo says this creates a loss on your Venmo account that you will need to pay back. A sent payment cannot be cancelled in the app.

There is no way to speed up a pending payment. To avoid the delay next time, Venmo suggests using a linked debit card as the funding source, or linking and verifying your bank account with the Instant method through Plaid.

Pending payments for goods and services

Venmo Purchase Protection covers Qualifying Payments only: Venmo Debit Card and Teen Debit Card purchases, purchases of goods and services from authorized merchants, and Pay and Request payments sent to business profiles or identified as for goods and services. When you mark a payment as goods and services or pay a business profile, a 2.99% transaction fee is charged to the seller.

Warning

A plain personal payment for an item is outside the program. The Venmo User Agreement states in capitals that if Venmo later reverses such a payment, you could lose both the goods and the money you sent.
