Two effects to notice. At small amounts the minimum fee dominates: moving $10 costs at least $0.25, which is 2.5% of the amount. At large amounts the maximum fee takes over: Venmo and PayPal stop at $25 once a transfer reaches about $1,429 ($25 ÷ 1.75%).

App by app

Cash App

  • Fee: 0.5%–2.5%, minimum $0.25–$1, maximum $75, as Cash App’s Terms of Service and its transfer speed page set it; the exact fee is shown before you complete the transfer. Some other Cash App pages quote 0.5%–1.75% with a $0.25 minimum, which sits inside that range.
  • Where it goes: your linked debit card, typically immediately.
  • If it fails: Cash App says some debit cards do not consistently support the networks it uses. In that case the money arrives in 1–3 business days and the instant fee is refunded.
  • Tracing a missing deposit: your withdrawal receipt shows a network reference (Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express) or an ACH trace number for your bank to search.

Venmo

  • Fee: 1.75%, minimum $0.25, maximum $25, deducted from the transfer amount and displayed before you complete the transfer.
  • Where it goes: eligible U.S. bank accounts and Visa, Mastercard or Discover debit cards that take part in services such as Visa Fast Funds or Mastercard Send.
  • When: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, typically within 30 minutes.
  • Minimum transfer: $0.26; below that, use the free standard transfer.
  • Changing your mind: within one hour of a standard transfer you can switch it to instant (“Get it faster”) or cancel it.
  • Declines: Venmo says support cannot override instant transfer declines; a standard transfer is still available.

PayPal

  • Fee: 1.75% of the amount, minimum $0.25, maximum $25 (USD).
  • Limits: instant to bank up to $25,000 per transaction; standard and instant to cards up to $5,000 per transaction, per day and per week, and $15,000 per month.
  • When: typically within minutes; PayPal says to contact your bank if the money is not there after 30 minutes.
  • Standard timing: usually 1 business day to a bank, up to 1–3 business days; about 48 hours to a debit card. Transfers started after 7:00 PM ET or on a weekend or holiday may take an additional day.

Where Zelle fits

Zelle has no instant transfer fee to compare, because there is no app balance to cash out: money sent with Zelle goes into the recipient’s bank account, typically within minutes if they are enrolled. Zelle says there are typically no fees for consumers to send or receive and recommends confirming with your bank. See how long does zelle take.

Standard or instant: the trade-off

Timeline

  1. You tap Transferchoose instant (fee) or standard (free)
  2. Instant, minutes latermoney typically reaches your debit card or eligible account within about 30 minutes
  3. Standard, next business dayVenmo and PayPal say bank transfers usually complete in about 1 business day
  4. Standard, up to 3 business daysthe latest typical arrival for all three apps; weekends and holidays add time

The instant fee buys time measured in business days; the standard route is free on all three apps. For how the ACH network sets that clock, see how long does ach take.

Warning

The instant fee is charged inside the app and shown on screen. A message asking you to pay a separate “processing” or “release” fee to receive money is a scam pattern: Cash App says its support will never ask you to send a payment or complete a test transaction, and Venmo says it will never ask you to send money to “verify” your account. The FTC notes that scammers often ask for fees to collect a prize or payment.
