Short answer
If you sent a Venmo payment to the wrong person, open the transaction and check its status. An unclaimed payment to an unregistered contact may have a Take Back option. For a completed payment to a stranger, contact Venmo Support with the transaction details. If you know the recipient, ask them to return it. Recovery is not guaranteed.

Start with the transaction, not the bank statement
Your bank statement shows how the payment was funded. The Venmo transaction tells you whether the recipient received it. Read both before deciding what to do, and keep the date, amount and recipient username together.
A useful support note is: “I sent this payment, but selected the wrong recipient. The intended recipient was different.” That accurately describes an accidental payment without calling an action you authorized an unauthorized transaction.
If the payment is simply delayed and the recipient is correct, use Venmo payment pending. This guide addresses the wrong recipient.
Choose the route that matches the payment
| What you see | Next step |
|---|---|
| Unclaimed payment to an unregistered phone number or email | Look for Take Back in the transaction |
| Completed payment to someone you know | Request the money back with a note |
| Completed payment to a stranger | Contact Venmo Support |
| Pending bank-funded payment with an estimated completion date | Ask the bank about cancellation; this route has a narrow scope |
| Unexpected money received from a stranger | Leave it untouched and contact Support |

Venmo says completed payments generally cannot be canceled, including those sent accidentally. Opening a dispute does not itself correct a wrong-recipient payment. For a stranger, give Support the recipient username, amount, date and intended recipient’s contact information. In the app, use Me, Settings, Get Help, then Chat With Us and ask for an agent.
For someone you know, Venmo suggests a charge request for the same amount with a short explanation. A request still depends on the recipient responding. Keep the original transaction available while you follow up.
When Take Back is available
Venmo’s pending-payment instructions put Take Back under the transaction in the Me tab’s Transactions feed. It is available when the recipient’s contact information is not associated with an active Venmo account.
After cancellation, Venmo gives different return estimates by funding source: immediately for a Venmo balance, up to five business days for a bank account and up to seven business days for a debit or credit card. An unclaimed payment expires after 30 days if it is neither claimed nor taken back.

For example, sending to an old email address and sending to the wrong active username can require different responses. Check the transaction before assuming either is cancelable. Avoid sending a replacement until you have established what happened to the first payment.
A bank stop is not a general undo button
Venmo permits contacting the bank to cancel a bank-funded payment only when it shows Pending with an estimated completion date. Its guidance warns that stopping a Completed payment creates a loss on the Venmo account that you must repay.

When speaking to either provider, name the transaction and its current status. Ask what action applies to that payment rather than requesting a broad stop on all Venmo debits.
If you received the mistaken payment
Venmo tells recipients of unexpected payments from strangers not to move the money or send it back themselves. Contact Support so it can handle the return. An unexpected payment alone does not establish that the account was compromised.
