Set up PayPal direct deposit

PayPal’s app instructions start from your balance. The screens can change, so check the labels in your own account.

  1. Open your PayPal balance and tap Direct Deposit.
  2. Tap Set Up Direct Deposit, then Find your employer.
  3. Find your employer or other payer and follow the on-screen steps. If it is not listed, choose the option to fill out a direct deposit form.
  4. Check the account and routing numbers provided by PayPal and give them to your payer using its approved process.
  5. Confirm with the payer when the change will take effect. Keep using your previous payment method until the payer confirms the switch.

On the web, PayPal says you can open Settings and choose View your Direct Deposit info. If you cannot find your payer, you can copy the direct deposit numbers and give them to the payer.

Warning

Get your account and routing numbers from your own PayPal account. Check them before submitting the form and share them through the payer’s legitimate payroll process. A payment sent to incorrect details may need investigation.

Which payments can arrive?

PayPal says direct deposit can receive all or part of a paycheck or a government payment into a PayPal Balance account. It lists examples including Social Security payments and tax refunds. The payer must be in the United States; PayPal says a transaction originating outside the US will fail. The payer may require its own form.

Direct deposit is an incoming payment. Sending your existing PayPal balance out to a bank is a separate process; see how long PayPal takes to transfer to a bank. PayPal says direct deposits use the ACH network. For the difference between incoming credits and outgoing debits, see ACH credit vs ACH debit.

When will the first deposit arrive?

PayPal says employer or payroll-provider deposits can take up to two pay cycles to start. The timing depends on when the payer needs to receive and verify a change before processing payroll. Until the change is in effect, you may still receive a physical check.

Once direct deposit is set up, PayPal says funds are generally available on the day they are applied to your account. Eligible customers may get access up to two days before their scheduled payment date when the payer sends instructions early. That is a possibility, not a guaranteed payday. PayPal also says federal or bank holidays can delay a deposit.

What if a deposit is missing?

Start with the payer. Ask whether the payroll change has taken effect, when the payment was sent and which account and routing numbers were used. In PayPal, open Activity and search for the payment. If the details are correct and the money has not arrived, PayPal says to contact it for an investigation.

During setup, the payer’s bank may send verification entries. PayPal describes two small credits and an offsetting debit labeled ACCTVERIFY; a payer may ask you to enter the amounts on its website. These verification entries are distinct from your paycheck.
