Short answer
When Zelle is not working, the cause is usually one of four things: your email or U.S. mobile number is enrolled at another bank, the number type is not accepted, you hit a sending limit your bank sets, or the bank delayed or blocked the payment for a fraud check. Zelle runs inside your bank’s app, so the bank is the first place to call.

This guide is for an error, a refusal or a block. If a payment you sent shows as pending, the zelle payment pending guide covers that case, and how long does zelle take explains normal timing.
“Already enrolled”: your contact is linked to another bank
Zelle’s FAQ says this message means your mobile number or email address may already be enrolled with a bank or credit union that offers Zelle. Zelle also says an email address or U.S. mobile number can be enrolled with only one bank account.
The fix Zelle gives is to re-enroll the same mobile number or email inside the banking app of the new bank. Wells Fargo describes the same step as transferring the enrollment: once moved, money sent to that number or email lands in the new account instead of the old one.
If you do not know where the contact was first enrolled, Zelle tells you to contact Zelle Support at 844-428-8542 or through zelle.com/support/contact.
Warning
Until the transfer is finished, money sent to that email or number still goes to the account where it is enrolled. Tell people who pay you which contact to use only after the new bank shows it as enrolled.
Your phone number will not enroll
Zelle lists three reasons a U.S. mobile number fails to enroll:
- It is already enrolled with Zelle at a different bank or credit union.
- It is not a U.S. mobile number. International numbers and landlines are not accepted.
- It begins with 1-800. Those numbers are not eligible.
Banks can be stricter. Wells Fargo’s Zelle terms, effective September 15, 2026, also exclude Google Voice and other VoIP numbers, toll-free numbers and disposable email addresses, and say the bank may unenroll a contact that does not meet its rules. If your number is refused, an email address you use regularly is the other way to enroll.
Age rules are also the bank’s: Zelle says to check with your financial institution, and some offer Zelle to customers under 18 on their own terms.
You used the old Zelle app
Zelle announced on October 31, 2024 that it was phasing out sending and receiving in its standalone app, and that app users would need to re-enroll through a bank or credit union that offers Zelle. Wells Fargo’s Zelle FAQ states that as of March 31, 2025 every user must be enrolled through a participating bank or credit union.
If you or the person you are paying relied on the app, enroll through a bank’s app or online banking instead. Zelle’s list of participating banks shows who offers it, and our banks that use zelle table adds each bank’s own source.
The payment is refused because of a limit
Zelle does not set sending limits. Its FAQ tells users to ask their bank or credit union about sending and receiving limits.
Banks describe limits that move with your situation. Regions says its daily and rolling 30-day limits vary by funding account, by recipient and by the transaction history with each recipient, and shows your current limit under the amount field when you send. Wells Fargo’s terms say its limits can vary by product, account type, transaction history and recipient, and can be temporarily reduced to protect the account. For most Wells Fargo consumer accounts the terms give $3,500 per rolling 24 hours and $20,000 per rolling 30 days.

A smaller amount, or waiting for the rolling window to clear, are the options a limit leaves. Our bank pages list the limits each bank publishes, for example the bank of america zelle limit.
The bank delayed or blocked the payment
A bank can hold a Zelle payment back. Wells Fargo’s terms say a payment may be delayed or blocked to prevent fraud or to meet regulatory requirements, and that the bank notifies you by email, push notification or text when it does. The same terms say a one-time code may be required the first time you send to a new recipient, which can delay that first payment.
Repeating the same payment does not clear a block. Call the number on your card or in your bank’s app, not a number from a text or a search ad, and ask what the hold needs.
The recipient says the money never arrived
Check the status in your bank’s payment activity first. Zelle says a pending status may mean the recipient has not enrolled the email or number you used, and that you can cancel at that point. A completed status means the money is already in the recipient’s account.
If the recipient never enrolls, Zelle says the payment expires after 14 days and the money returns to your account. If more than three days have passed, Zelle suggests the recipient confirm their enrollment and the contact they gave you. The recipient’s side is covered in how to receive money with zelle.
Both people need U.S. bank accounts: Zelle cannot pay an account outside the United States.
