Instant transfers: where the caps change the answer
Both apps charge a percentage for an instant transfer, but the caps differ. PayPal’s 1.75% stops at $25, which it reaches at about $1,429. Cash App’s fee is a range, and it shows the exact amount before you confirm.
On a $500 transfer, PayPal charges $8.75, and Cash App’s range works out to $2.50–$12.50. On a $3,000 transfer, PayPal charges its $25 maximum, while Cash App’s range runs from $15 to its $75 maximum. For a large transfer, compare the Cash App quote on the screen with PayPal’s $25 cap before you tap. The instant transfer fees guide adds Venmo to the same comparison.
If one to three business days is fine, skip the fee: the standard transfer is free on both. PayPal says a standard transfer started after 7:00 PM ET, or on a weekend or holiday, may take an extra day. For PayPal’s full timing, see how long does PayPal take to transfer to bank.
Limits are counted differently
Cash App counts sending on a rolling 30-day window. An unverified or sponsored account can send and receive up to $1,000 in that window, with a $1,500 total account limit. A verified account can send up to $40,000 per rolling 30 days, and Cash App shows each verified account’s receiving limit in the Limits section of the app. The Cash App limit guide covers the Cash Card and bitcoin limits too.
PayPal counts per payment. Without verification you can send one payment of up to $4,000, and PayPal shows your total sending limit when you go to send. A verified account has no total sending limit; one payment can be up to $60,000, though PayPal says it may limit that to $10,000.
These are the providers’ published ceilings, not approval guarantees. Either app can review a payment or a withdrawal. PayPal says its withdrawal reviews typically clear within 24 hours but may take up to 72 hours.
Paying friends with a card
PayPal charges no fee to send money to a friend in the US from your PayPal balance or a bank account. Funding the same payment with a card costs 2.90% plus a fixed $0.30. Cash App’s sending steps list your balance, a linked debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay as the ways to pay.
Warning
A payment to a friend is not a purchase. If you are paying a seller you do not know, read PayPal Friends and Family first. If you sent Cash App money to the wrong person, see Cash App sent money to wrong person.
Which one fits
- Moving large sums out quickly: PayPal’s $25 instant-fee cap is usually cheaper on big withdrawals than Cash App’s $75 cap.
- One large payment to a person: a verified PayPal account allows up to $60,000 per payment; Cash App’s verified send limit is $40,000 per rolling 30 days.
- Small, frequent payments: both are free from balance, and Cash App’s instant range starts lower at 0.5%.
- No hurry: use the free standard transfer on either app.
