Short answer

Most bank transfers do not go through on weekends. ACH payments and wires settle only on Federal Reserve business days, so a transfer started after Friday’s cutoff or on Saturday usually lands on Monday, or Tuesday after a Monday holiday. Zelle, instant transfers from apps and FedNow payments can arrive on a weekend, because they do not wait for ACH or Fedwire to open.

Whether your money moves on Saturday depends on the rail it travels on, not on your bank’s app. The app accepts the request any day; the network that carries it may not. The table below works out the next dates for the weekends and holidays left in 2026.

Weekends and holidays through New Year’s: when ACH and wires move

Each row assumes you send after your bank’s cutoff on the day shown. The middle column is the first day an ACH payment can settle and a domestic wire can go out over Fedwire. A next-day ACH credit lands that day; a two-day ACH credit lands one banking day later.

The longest gap of the year-end is Christmas. The Federal Reserve’s FedACH schedule stops processing on December 24, 2026 at 11:30 PM ET and resumes on Sunday, December 27 at 5:30 PM ET, for settlement on Monday, December 28. Zelle, FedNow and app instant transfers are not affected.

Venmo gives its own example: a standard transfer started on a Monday bank holiday begins processing on Tuesday, so Wednesday is the first day to expect it. An instant transfer from an app is fast because it does not wait for ACH settlement; that speed is what the fee pays for. For the fees side by side, see instant transfer fees.

Sending a wire on Friday or Saturday

The Federal Reserve treats every Saturday and Sunday as a Fedwire holiday. Its funds-transfer business day starts at 9:00 PM ET the evening before and ends at 7:00 PM ET, and the last deadline for customer wires is 6:45 PM ET. Your bank’s cutoff comes earlier; see wire transfer cutoff time for the banks we track.

  • Friday, before your bank’s cutoff: the wire can go out the same day.
  • Friday, after the cutoff, or any time Saturday: the bank holds it. Fedwire opens at 9:00 PM ET on Sunday for Monday’s business day, so the wire is sent on Monday within your bank’s hours.
  • Monday is a holiday: Fedwire opens Monday evening for Tuesday instead.

When the money shows in the recipient’s account after Fedwire delivers it is up to the receiving bank. If it has not appeared, the sending bank can trace it with the IMAD OMAD number.

Why ACH stops on weekends

ACH payments are settled between banks through the Federal Reserve. Nacha, which writes the ACH rules, says payments settle only while the Federal Reserve’s settlement service is open: it is closed on weekends and federal holidays, and on business days from 6:30 PM to 7:30 AM ET. A payment can be queued at any time, but no money changes hands until the next window.

On a Friday, a bank that offers same day ACH can still settle a payment that day. Nacha’s chart sets the last same-day submission window for banks at 4:45 PM ET, with settlement at 6:00 PM ET; the funds must be available by the end of the receiving bank’s processing day. Your bank’s deadline for customers is earlier than the network’s.

The Federal Reserve announced on October 9, 2025 that Fedwire will add Sundays and weekday holidays (22 hours a day, six days a week), planned for 2028 or 2029. Until then, wires do not run on weekends.

Warning

The next Federal Reserve holiday is Wednesday, November 11, 2026 (Veterans Day). ACH and Fedwire settlement pause that day, so a transfer started after Tuesday’s cutoff may not settle until Thursday, November 12. Thanksgiving is November 26 and Christmas is December 25: see federal reserve holidays 2026.

Payday, bills and weekends

Nacha’s standard practice favors you on both sides of a weekend. A payday that falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday is paid on the prior Friday, and a direct deposit due on a Friday is normally available by 9:00 AM that day. A bill payment due on a weekend is collected on the next business day.

Your options if money must arrive this weekend

  1. Zelle, if both of you use it and you trust the recipient. It typically arrives within minutes, but a payment to an enrolled recipient cannot be canceled. See how long does Zelle take.
  2. An instant transfer out of Venmo or Cash App, for the fee in the table above.
  3. An instant payment from your bank, if it offers FedNow payments and the receiving bank does too.
  4. Plan for Monday for anything that goes by ACH or wire, and later if Monday is a holiday. For normal timing, see how long does ACH take and how long do wire transfers take.
