Why it matters

More local businesses now ask to be paid with Zelle. Zelle names real estate, health services, construction and specialty contractors, and transportation services as the largest categories using Zelle tag. Money sent to an enrolled recipient typically arrives within minutes, and it comes straight out of your bank account.

That speed cuts both ways. Zelle payments are hard to reverse once sent, so the business behind the Zelle tag should be the one you mean to pay. Zelle tag has been available since 2025 and is part of Zelle Forward, the network’s program for new uses.

Zelle says it is available through a network of more than 2,300 financial institutions. Whether a fee applies is set by your bank; Zelle’s Q1 2026 survey found 99.40% of linked consumer accounts pay no fee to send, receive or request money.

What to do

  • Before paying a contractor or other business, confirm its Zelle tag, email or phone number with the business directly.
  • For work not yet done, think twice before paying the full amount up front with a method that is hard to reverse.
  • Check your own bank’s Zelle limits and fees in its app.
