Citi’s terms define the two statuses. “Untenured” is a temporary status with lower limits after a new enrollment or a change to your risk profile or Zelle profile, such as a new mobile number, email address, Zelle tag or linked account number. “Tenured” is your regular status once that period ends. The limit that applies to you, tenured or untenured, is shown when you send a payment.
“Standard” limits apply to accounts in Citi’s simplified banking that are not in a Relationship Tier. Citi’s Citi Priority page lists increased limits for Zelle payments among the benefits of its Relationship Tiers.

How the Citi Zelle limits are counted
- Per account, not per person. The limits apply to the checking account, so two signers on one account share them.
- Daily limit: counted from 12:00:00 AM to 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time, so it resets at midnight ET, not 24 hours after your last payment.
- 30-day limit: a rolling 30 calendar days, so a payment drops out of the count 30 days after you send it.
- New recipients: you may be able to send less to someone who enrolled with Zelle recently or does not use it actively, even if you have not reached your own limits.
- Temporary cuts: Citi can lower your limits to protect your account.

Warning
Changing your mobile carrier unenrolls that phone number from Zelle at Citi. You must enroll it again, and your limits drop to the untenured $500 a day and $2,500 per 30 days for a while.
Timing, scheduling and canceling
Money sent to someone already enrolled with Zelle usually arrives within minutes. If the recipient is not enrolled, they have 14 calendar days to enroll with the same email address or mobile number, or the payment is canceled. Citi can delay or block a payment to check for fraud and says it will tell you if it does.
On a consumer account you can schedule a one-time payment for a future date and cancel it up to one calendar day before the send date in the Citi Mobile App. Recurring Zelle payments are not offered. A payment to someone already enrolled cannot be canceled; only one waiting for an unenrolled recipient can be stopped.

Who can use Zelle at Citi
You need an eligible Citibank checking account, Citi Online or the Citi Mobile App, and an email address or US mobile number. Landline, toll-free, international and internet (VoIP) phone numbers cannot enroll, and Google Voice numbers are excluded too. Consumer accounts are for personal payments; eligible small business accounts have their own limits above. Citi may end your enrollment if you do not send or request money at least once every 18 months.

What to do if you need to send more
- Wait for the reset. The daily limit restarts at midnight ET; the 30-day total still applies.
- Check your status. If you changed your phone, email or carrier recently, you may be on the lower untenured limits for now.
- Send a wire for one large payment. Steps and what the bank asks for are in how to send a wire transfer; Citi’s wire details are on its bank page.
Warning
Neither Citi nor Zelle offers purchase protection, so pay only people you know and trust. Citi’s terms say reimbursement is available for unauthorized payments and certain qualifying imposter scams; report those to Citi at 1-800-374-9700, open 24 hours a day.
