Step by step: sending to a bitcoin address
This is the on-chain route. Use it when the recipient gives you a regular bitcoin address, for example the deposit address from an exchange or their own wallet.
- Tap the Money tab on the Cash App home screen.
- Tap the Bitcoin tile.
- Tap the arrows button and choose Send Bitcoin.
- Enter the amount (you can switch between BTC and USD).
- Paste or scan the recipient’s bitcoin address, then tap Next.
- Choose a speed: Standard, Rush or Priority.
- Check the fee on the confirmation screen and confirm.
Cash App says that the first time you withdraw bitcoin you may need to enter some additional personal information.

Step by step: paying a Lightning invoice
Lightning is a second-layer network on top of Bitcoin, intended for faster transactions with low fees. Cash App says Lightning transactions are almost instant and are not recorded on the blockchain.
- Go to the Money tab and tap the Bitcoin tile.
- Tap the QR icon in the top right corner.
- Scan the Lightning invoice QR code or paste the invoice.
- Choose where the money comes from and confirm.
Paying from your Cash balance (dollars) adds a 0.9% processing fee for converting dollars to bitcoin. Paying from your bitcoin balance avoids it, Cash App says. Lightning invoices expire after 72 hours and can’t be paid twice; if one has expired, ask for a new one.
Which to choose
| If the recipient gives you | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A bitcoin address (for example an exchange deposit address) | On-chain send | The address is on the Bitcoin network |
| A Lightning invoice | Lightning | Near-instant; counts toward the $999 per 7 days limit |
| A $cashtag | Neither | Cash App stopped bitcoin sends between $cashtags on December 20, 2024; ask for an address or invoice |

Cash App says payments from QR codes go through Lightning automatically unless you have reached your Lightning limit or choose the Bitcoin network yourself. If you hit the limit, the payment goes on-chain instead.
Speed and fees
The speed you pick changes the fee, not the destination. Cash App calculates the Priority and Rush “pro-rata” part from estimated network fees at the time of your order, and says it may at times charge more than the estimated network fee to cover volatility. Standard is free but needs at least 0.001 BTC and can take up to 24 hours. Whatever you choose, the fee is on the confirmation screen before you send.
For small amounts, note the minimums: Standard needs at least 0.001 BTC, while Rush and Priority accept as little as 0.00005 BTC. How Bitcoin fees move with demand: crypto network fees.
Limits
Cash App’s bitcoin limits are rolling: they cover any consecutive 1-day, 7-day and 30-day period and reset at the top of the next hour. Lightning has its own cap of $999 in bitcoin every 7 days. You see your on-chain dollar limits under Profile > Limits in the app. Dollar limits for sending and receiving cash are a separate topic: see cash app limit.
Only bitcoin
Cash App only supports bitcoin (BTC). It says other cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin Cash, sent to a Cash App bitcoin address result in permanent loss of funds. If someone is sending you crypto, make sure it is BTC on the Bitcoin network or Lightning.
Warning
Transactions sent to wallets outside Cash App cannot be reversed. Cash App advises verifying the receiving address and sending only to your own wallet or to someone you know and trust. Anyone who demands payment in bitcoin, for a fine, a fee or to “protect” your money, is a scammer, the FTC says. Check Cash App: Bitcoin withdrawals · FTC · Checked on September 27, 2026
